Week 5 Reading Response

Who Should Respond? A Systematic Approach to Media Education, pages: 56-60

Well, according to this reading, there are core problems that our educational system and society need to be aware of and should be concerned with. Basically the problems revolve around ensuring that our young Americans have access to, the ability to, and have been socialized into the emeriging ethical standards that will shape their practices as participants within online communitites.

But how should this begin is the big question? It shouldn't be this daunting add-on subject that has to be crammed into the daily schedule of standards to be met. Rather media literacy should be seen as a paradigm shift that should reshape how we teach every subject. Media literacy should be tools that aid in teaching all subjects and interwoven, not a separate entity that requires teaching separate from all other subjects in our curriculum.

This is happening in some schools and after school programs, but as a whole, technology and media literacy aren't being mainstreamed into classrooms consistently. Technology needs to be consistently used in the classroom during the day, and not used strategically in afterschool programs as a way to catch up. All students need this media rich environment to beable to play, explore, network, collaborate, go through simulations, perform etc..

Schools have to start making this a priority and start "doing" rather than just "talking!"

Class 4 Reading Response

I chose to focus my reading on the sections: Social Software and Media Creation and Sharing.

The rise of the participation culture emcompasses many applications, tools, and resources for sharing, many which are free if you subscribe and become a member. The difference in this web 2.0 era, is the variety and choices that users have. The internet has become a live, active ever-changing medium, where anyones interests and likes can be met. From socializing to photography, to creating your own sites, videos etc. the options are limitless it seems. Despite the hype on social networking and participation one can still choose to keep their blogs, videos etc. private.

It's almost as if there is "too" many choices in terms of applications and tools to choose from. The well-known social software like myspace and facebook, and media creation/hosting sites like flickr and YouTube have gotten a lot of attention, but their are many others out their.

The internet has become a wonderful technology for communicating, socializing, creation, and above all, sharing with others. Public or private.

Class 3 Reading Response

This week's readings really focused on Web 2.0 and how the internet has really gone through a new phase in terms of how the internet is being used. The internet is seen as being a live, living tool, that allows consumers and users to "do" things on the web. It really is a place for experiementation for all types of users, and even those that aren't as web savvy are able to make a positive impact on the web and contribute to what it is now and what the web will become in the future.

Flickr and Myspace are two programs that were created by couples that in this new web 2.0 phase have been able to capitalize on. These websites and there are plenty more, are really aimed at pleasing internet users and what they are interested in. All of these new web 2.0 sites, are for the most part free, and they vary from photography sites to social networking. The same goes for social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, which has allowed internet users to keep an organized track of useful websites to share with outhers and to beable to go to any computer and beable to have those sites at one's fingertips.

Basically, the internet is becoming more of a living space, where everyone is able to contribute and benefit from. With all these changes and new sites, does bring the concern with security and reliability. However, one shouldn't be scared to explore and experiment the internet as it is today. It definitely isn't what it was ten years ago. As a society, we need to keep up with the changes, as they are changing by the minute. I am an examle.

Week #2 Reading Response

A Day in the Life of Web 2.0 (Warlick 2006) was eye opening for me. I just couldn’t imagine my site or district being that organized to be successful with communicating in such a virtual way. I think it is absolutely wonderful because it allows teachers, parents, and administrators to work together to teach students and inform parents as well as collaborating more in-depth about what is being taught.

The Top 100 Alternate Sites article was confusing yet intriguing at the same time. It is difficult to understand all the savvy internet language used, however, I obtained from the article that there are a lot of search engines that are great besides the well-known “Google” site. I didn’t even realize that “Google” was the top search engine! I have always used yahoo and am now starting to use “Google” more. I guess it really made me feel like I have a lot to learn about what is new in the online world and that the internet is a fast-paced ever-changing media, where one can just be consumed by all the different tools and knowledge that the internet has to offer. I need to step outside of the box and start challenging myself to use different sites and explore more.

The other articles that interested me off of RWW were: Semantic Web: What is the Killer, Top 100 Alternate Sites, 2008 Web Predictions, and A Big List of Sites that teach You How to Do Something. The last site I mentioned was fascinating to me. I checked out the links Instructables and VideoJug, which are considered the world’s largest show and tell and tutorials sites for general things from food and how to make a cake, to the steps on building a deck etc. To be honest, I didn’t know these kind of sites existed, or at least to this extent. The videos where easy to follow, see, and quite user friendly. I would definitely go back and use these web 2.0 tools.

I would like to know more about the Semantic Web: What is the killer. The article left me questioning really what it is means. Does it relate to a simple language that the computer can understand easier to solve more complex problems?
